Environmental monitoring for an underground utility tunnel

Several underground power tunnels and gallery sections, with about 35 acquisition gateways along the route; owner-supplied sensors and hundreds of video channels onboarded together

  • Our role: Equipment and platform supply
  • An airport underground tunnel network

Project overview

An airport brought its underground power tunnels and utility galleries into power and environment monitoring. The route is plotted on a satellite base map, with about 35 SG-II gateways along it. The owner supplies temperature/humidity, level, oxygen, carbon dioxide and cover-status sensors in proportion to the gateways. Output modules start and stop pumps from level so water stays in range. Fans and lighting can be operated remotely or interlocked with the environment; cable circulating current is monitored. Hundreds of owner-supplied cameras (IPC and NVR) sit with the environment points, so a cover or level alarm can be checked against the picture.

Main functions delivered

  1. Network overview: the tunnel is plotted on a base map; a click shows environment, level, gas, cover status and linked video
  2. Flood interlock: pumps start and stop on level so water stays in range; remote and local control remain
  3. Cover monitoring: open/closed status alarms; an unexpected open can be checked against a nearby camera
  4. Gas and climate: oxygen, CO₂ and temperature/humidity along the route; breaches alarm and can interlock fans
  5. Cable and plant: circulating current visible; fans and lighting remotely switched, with action counts
  6. Video join-up: hundreds of owner IPC and NVR channels on the same platform; an alarm point can show the picture

Control and video

Category Item Model Qty Use
Control Automatic pump control Gateway / module output Matches level points Start on high level, stop when back in range; remote or local
Control Fan and lighting control Gateway / module output By section Remote on/off; can interlock with gas or environment
Video Network cameras (IPC) Owner supply Hundreds of channels Fixed, zoom and PTZ cameras linked to environment points
Video Network video recorder (NVR) Owner supply Several Existing record and playback join the same platform

The problem

The tunnels are long, covers are scattered, and flood and gas risk changes along the route. Inspection rounds are slow; water level, covers, gas and video sit in different views; pumps cannot follow level automatically, so exceptions surface late.

What we connected

  • SG-II gateways and I/O modules (pump, fan and lighting control)
  • Owner-supplied temperature/humidity, level, oxygen, CO₂ and cover status
  • Cable circulating-current capture
  • Hundreds of owner-supplied IPC / NVR channels

What we did

  • Gateways sit along the route so sensors onboard nearby instead of hauling every point back to a room
  • Level points have output modules so pumps interlock at the edge on thresholds, with remote override on the platform
  • Owner temperature/humidity, gas, covers and video onboarded by protocol; cameras and NVRs are not replaced
  • Alarms graded for level, covers and gas, linked to nearby video, so duty handles them on one map

How it was rolled out

  1. Walk the tunnels to confirm gateway locations, wet points, covers and existing cameras
  2. Connect level–pump interlock and cover status first, then temperature/humidity and gas
  3. Onboard owner IPC / NVR to the same platform and map alarms to nearby cameras
  4. Check pump auto start/stop range, fan and lighting permissions, and graded alarms

Outcome

  • The underground network is visible on one map
  • Flooding is pumped automatically from level so water stays in range
  • Unexpected cover opens and gas breaches alarm, and can be checked against video
  • Existing owner cameras join the environment view without replacement
