A provincial-capital central hospital (confidential)

Delivered in 2023. Two phases of hospital restrooms: 75 ceiling stall sensors and 7 management hosts. Corridor smoking alerts and cleaner check-ins share one operations view.

Project overview

In 2023 Tongwei supplied smart restrooms, corridor smoking control and cleaner attendance for a central hospital in a provincial capital. The hospital name is not published. Restrooms were connected in two phases. The first uses ceiling sensors for occupied or free, indicator units to show that outside the stall, and emergency buttons, four-in-one environment sensing and infrared footfall into the same management host. The later phase extends the same pattern: more stall sensors, indicators, help buttons and environment sensors, with entrance counters for footfall. Together that is 75 ceiling stall sensors, 69 indicator units, 69 emergency buttons, 13 four-in-one environment sensors, 13 footfall counters and 7 management hosts. One platform was built; later devices join the existing platform. The restroom screen shows free stalls for the men's and women's rooms, with temperature, humidity, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and footfall. Corridor smoking alerts by floor, marking the floor on the building view and keeping a record. Cleaners check in by location, so the screen shows that day's cleaning count and the latest clean. Occupancy, odour, corridor smoking and cleaner attendance can therefore be read on one operations view.

On site

Main functions delivered

  1. Stall guidance: 75 ceiling sensors and 69 indicator units across both phases, so occupancy is visible outside the stall
  2. Air and footfall: 13 four-in-one sensors for temperature, humidity and air quality; 13 counters, infrared matrix first and entrance counts later, without filming faces
  3. Help: 69 emergency buttons for calls inside the restroom
  4. Corridor smoking control: alerts by floor, the building view marks which floor, and the alarm is kept on record
  5. Cleaner attendance: check-in by location, with that day's count and the latest clean, so it can be compared with footfall and odour

The problem

At this central hospital, peak-hour stall vacancy is unclear, and cleaners learn a room is busy only at the door. Corridor no-smoking rules depend on patrols, cleaning attendance is unrecorded, and facilities staff need restrooms, smoking alerts and cleaning on one screen.

What we connected

  • Ceiling stall sensing and indicators outside the stall
  • Four-in-one environment sensing and entrance footfall
  • Emergency help buttons
  • Corridor smoking alerts and cleaner check-in

What we did

  • Connect occupancy, air, footfall and help for one set of restrooms first, confirm indicators and alarms, then extend with the same list
  • Hosts stay on site; later hosts join the existing platform instead of starting another system
  • Corridor smoking alerts and cleaner check-ins share the operations view with restroom status

How it was rolled out

  1. By floor, confirm stall counts, male and female rooms, and power and network
  2. In phase one, install ceiling sensing, indicators, help, environment and footfall, and join the host to the platform
  3. In phase two, add the same devices for the new restrooms, and bring corridor smoking alerts and cleaner check-ins onto the same view

Outcome

  • Occupancy is visible outside the stall, so peak-hour visitors are less often turned around at a full door
  • Corridor smoking leaves an alarm by floor, instead of relying only on patrols
  • Cleaner check-ins sit with restroom footfall and odour, so facilities staff can compare attendance with conditions on site

If your site is similar

Send stall counts, whether delivery is by floor, and whether corridor smoking alerts and cleaner check-ins should share one view.

Smart Restroom

Other cases in this scenario

Case studies

Municipal restrooms

Star-rated public restrooms in Tianhe, Guangzhou

Tianhe's restrooms are busy, so odour, wet floors and finding a free stall depend on cleaners watching. Sound-activated lights can go out while a stall is still occupied; missed flushes and unwashed floors mean complaints arrive before detection.

Transport hub

Smart restrooms at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport terminal

Baiyun Airport's terminal traffic is concentrated, so toilet paper and hand soap run out before stalls do. Cleaners refill on a fixed route, remaining stock is invisible, and passenger complaints arrive first.

Scenic area / park

Smart restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple, Yuncheng, Shanxi

Restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple sit along the visitor route, and holiday traffic arrives all at once. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only by walking there, and visitors learn there is no free stall only at the door.

Public venue

Smart restrooms at Guangdong Science Center

Traffic through the galleries, cinemas and public areas at Guangdong Science Center is uneven. Study seasons and holidays can reach tens of thousands of visitors in a day, and restrooms sit on several floors. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only at the door.

Expressway service area

Smart restroom operations across expressway service areas for Guangdong Communications Investment

Guangdong Communications Investment's service areas sit far apart along the expressway, and holiday traffic arrives at once. One site has many stalls; cleaners learn it is full only at the door. Headquarters needs occupancy, odour, footfall and water across several sites, without posting someone at each.
