Smart restrooms at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport terminal

Delivered in 2023. Terminal restrooms have stall sensing, door indicators and emergency call. About 52 smart paper dispensers and 8 smart soap dispensers watch remaining stock, and the platform also shows free stalls, air and footfall.

Project overview

In 2023 Tongwei supplied the smart-restroom scheme for the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport terminal. Wireless stall sensors mark occupied or free, indicator units show that outside the door, and emergency buttons cover urgent help. Smart paper and soap dispensers report remaining stock, so an empty roll or empty soap notifies cleaning and replenishment follows consumption instead of the next scheduled walk-by. A management host aggregates each restroom. The Baiyun Airport smart-restroom screen shows free stalls for the men's and women's rooms, together with temperature, humidity, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, footfall, and remaining toilet paper, sink towels and soap. With many rooms and long refill routes, stock is visible, so paper and soap do not wait for a passenger complaint. The list for this configuration is about 52 smart paper dispensers, 8 smart soap dispensers, about 32 each of stall sensors, indicators and emergency buttons, and about 4 management hosts.

On site

Main functions delivered

  1. Stall occupancy: wireless sensing, with the door indicator kept in step, so people stop opening doors to check
  2. Emergency call: in-room wireless buttons report directly, so duty staff do not wait for a passenger to reach a desk
  3. Paper level: about 52 smart dispensers alarm when paper is low or out, so refills happen before a stall runs dry
  4. Soap level: about 8 smart dispensers alarm on low soap, so empty bottles are not found by passenger complaints
  5. One view: occupancy, help calls, low paper and low soap, with air and footfall on the same screen; refill routes follow alarms, not only the roster

The problem

Baiyun Airport's terminal traffic is concentrated, so toilet paper and hand soap run out before stalls do. Cleaners refill on a fixed route, remaining stock is invisible, and passenger complaints arrive first.

What we connected

  • Wireless stall sensing and stall indicator lights
  • Wireless emergency-call buttons
  • Smart paper dispensers that monitor remaining paper
  • Smart soap dispensers that monitor remaining soap
  • Management hosts and one shared platform

What we did

  • Occupancy, indicators and help calls first, so a free stall can be found and a person can be reached
  • Paper and soap alarm on remaining stock — the point a terminal needs more than a typical public restroom
  • Hosts aggregate in the restroom; the platform schedules paper, soap and help-call response from alarms

How it was rolled out

  1. By terminal zone, count stalls, wash basins and where wireless install is allowed
  2. Bring up occupancy, indicators and help calls first, then remaining-stock reports from paper and soap dispensers
  3. Prove one low-paper, low-soap and help-call path through to replenishment, then roll out to the other restrooms

Outcome

  • Low paper and low soap are visible before a passenger complains
  • Free stalls and emergency calls stay online, so finding a stall or getting help does not depend on word of mouth
  • Refills follow consumption and alarms, so long terminal routes are not only a fixed loop

If your site is similar

Send restroom and stall counts, wash-basin count, and whether paper and soap are refilled on a patrol or need level alarms.

Smart Restroom

Other cases in this scenario

Case studies

Municipal restrooms

Star-rated public restrooms in Tianhe, Guangzhou

Tianhe's restrooms are busy, so odour, wet floors and finding a free stall depend on cleaners watching. Sound-activated lights can go out while a stall is still occupied; missed flushes and unwashed floors mean complaints arrive before detection.

Scenic area / park

Smart restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple, Yuncheng, Shanxi

Restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple sit along the visitor route, and holiday traffic arrives all at once. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only by walking there, and visitors learn there is no free stall only at the door.

Public venue

Smart restrooms at Guangdong Science Center

Traffic through the galleries, cinemas and public areas at Guangdong Science Center is uneven. Study seasons and holidays can reach tens of thousands of visitors in a day, and restrooms sit on several floors. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only at the door.

Expressway service area

Smart restroom operations across expressway service areas for Guangdong Communications Investment

Guangdong Communications Investment's service areas sit far apart along the expressway, and holiday traffic arrives at once. One site has many stalls; cleaners learn it is full only at the door. Headquarters needs occupancy, odour, footfall and water across several sites, without posting someone at each.

Healthcare

A provincial-capital central hospital (confidential)

At this central hospital, peak-hour stall vacancy is unclear, and cleaners learn a room is busy only at the door. Corridor no-smoking rules depend on patrols, cleaning attendance is unrecorded, and facilities staff need restrooms, smoking alerts and cleaning on one screen.

Next step

If your site is similar

Send restroom and stall counts, wash-basin count, and whether paper and soap are refilled on a patrol or need level alarms.
