Smart restrooms at Guangdong Science Center

Delivered in 2024. Seven restrooms and 152 stall sensors across exhibition floors first; one more later, with door-lock occupancy, an entrance guide screen and water metering.

  • Our role: Equipment and platform supply
  • Delivered 2024
  • Public venue

Project overview

In 2024 Tongwei supplied the smart-restroom scheme for Guangdong Science Center. The venue is open to the public, with several themed galleries, special-effect cinemas and an outdoor science area. Visitors move between exhibits, cinemas and public areas, and study seasons or holidays can reach tens of thousands of people in a day. Restrooms are not on one floor, so cleaners have to judge across levels which room to visit first. The first phase connects seven restrooms: wireless sensors for occupied or free, a red or green indicator outside the stall, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide for odour, and infrared matrix counters at the entrance that do not film faces. Each restroom has a management host; ceiling presence sensors and input-output modules interlock lighting and similar loads. All seven share one platform, with a venue-specific interface. A later restroom uses the door-lock state for occupancy, senses temperature, humidity, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and illuminance, and adds a 50-inch entrance guide screen plus water metering. The accessible room has its own presence sensor. Entrance screens, including the one on level 3, show free stalls for the men's and women's rooms, temperature, humidity, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, footfall and water use before entry. Its host keeps acquiring and interlocking if the platform link drops, and it joins the existing platform.

On site

Main functions delivered

  1. Stall guidance: 152 wireless sensors and 159 indicators in phase one, so occupancy is visible outside; the later restroom uses 31 door locks
  2. Odour: phase one senses ammonia and hydrogen sulphide in each restroom; the new one adds temperature, humidity and illuminance, and breaches drive cleaning
  3. Footfall: infrared matrix counts at the entrance, without filming faces. Twenty-one counters across the first seven restrooms, and one for the new room
  4. Interlock: ceiling presence sensors and input-output modules switch lighting and similar loads by occupancy
  5. Guidance and water for the new restroom: a 50-inch screen at the door shows free stalls, air and footfall; meters show consumption and abnormal water use
  6. One platform for the venue: the first seven restrooms use a custom interface, and the new restroom joins it; its host still works locally if the platform link is down

The problem

Traffic through the galleries, cinemas and public areas at Guangdong Science Center is uneven. Study seasons and holidays can reach tens of thousands of visitors in a day, and restrooms sit on several floors. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only at the door.

What we connected

  • Wireless stall sensing or door-lock occupancy, with indicators outside
  • Odour sensing for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide, plus footfall counts
  • Presence sensing and interlock for lighting and similar loads
  • Entrance guide screen and water metering

What we did

  • Connect occupancy, odour and footfall at the busiest restrooms first, confirm indicators and interlock, then extend to other floors
  • Hosts stay in the restroom and the platform watches the whole venue, so finding a stall is not only in the cloud
  • The new restroom stays on the same platform, switches occupancy to the door lock, and adds the entrance screen and water metering

How it was rolled out

  1. By exhibition floor, confirm restroom count, stalls, male and female rooms and the accessible room
  2. In phase one, install wireless sensing, indicators, odour, footfall and interlock, and join all seven to one platform
  3. For the new restroom, install door-lock sensing, the entrance screen and water metering, check local operation if the link drops, then join the platform

Outcome

  • Visitors are not turned around only at a full door; the entrance screen and stall indicators show free stalls
  • Odour and footfall reach cleaners first, so they do not walk every restroom across floors
  • The restrooms at Guangdong Science Center share one platform for occupancy, odour and footfall

If your site is similar

Send restroom count, whether delivery is phased, whether stalls use wireless sensors or door locks, and whether an entrance screen and water metering are needed.

Smart Restroom

Other cases in this scenario

Case studies

Municipal restrooms

Star-rated public restrooms in Tianhe, Guangzhou

Tianhe's restrooms are busy, so odour, wet floors and finding a free stall depend on cleaners watching. Sound-activated lights can go out while a stall is still occupied; missed flushes and unwashed floors mean complaints arrive before detection.

Transport hub

Smart restrooms at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport terminal

Baiyun Airport's terminal traffic is concentrated, so toilet paper and hand soap run out before stalls do. Cleaners refill on a fixed route, remaining stock is invisible, and passenger complaints arrive first.

Scenic area / park

Smart restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple, Yuncheng, Shanxi

Restrooms at Xiezhou Guandi Temple sit along the visitor route, and holiday traffic arrives all at once. Cleaners learn a room is full or smelly only by walking there, and visitors learn there is no free stall only at the door.

Expressway service area

Smart restroom operations across expressway service areas for Guangdong Communications Investment

Guangdong Communications Investment's service areas sit far apart along the expressway, and holiday traffic arrives at once. One site has many stalls; cleaners learn it is full only at the door. Headquarters needs occupancy, odour, footfall and water across several sites, without posting someone at each.

Healthcare

A provincial-capital central hospital (confidential)

At this central hospital, peak-hour stall vacancy is unclear, and cleaners learn a room is busy only at the door. Corridor no-smoking rules depend on patrols, cleaning attendance is unrecorded, and facilities staff need restrooms, smoking alerts and cleaning on one screen.

Next step

If your site is similar

Send restroom count, whether delivery is phased, whether stalls use wireless sensors or door locks, and whether an entrance screen and water metering are needed.
